Smart Home Locks: Quick Start Guide

Smart locks make it easy to unlock your door with a code, manage access for family and guests, and on some models, control your lock from your phone. This quick start guide walks through a typical keypad + deadbolt setup from installation to pairing and troubleshooting.

Quick Answer

Follow these four steps to install, power, pair, and manage your smart lock.

Install

Confirm your door prep, then mount the deadbolt and keypad.

Power Up

Install fresh batteries and run the lock’s handing or calibration step.

Pair

Connect with Bluetooth first. Wi-Fi may require a hub or bridge on some models.

Add Access

Create a master code first, then add unique user codes.

Step 1

Confirm Your Door Is Ready

Before installing your smart lock, check your existing door prep. Most residential doors use a 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" backset, 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" door thickness, and a 2-1/8" bore with a 1" edge bore.

Step 2

Install the Smart Deadbolt

Replace the old deadbolt, install the new latch, and mount the keypad and interior assembly. Tighten screws evenly so the keypad sits straight without being pinched.

Remove your old deadbolt if you are replacing existing hardware.
Install the new deadbolt latch in the door edge and make sure it sits centered and flush.
Mount the exterior keypad assembly through the bore hole.
Attach the interior mounting plate and interior lock body.
Tighten screws evenly and avoid overtightening.
Step 3

Set Up Keypad Access

Start with a master or admin code, then create separate user codes for family, guests, or service providers. Unique codes make it easier to remove access later without changing everyone’s code.

Master Code

Create the admin code first before adding other users.

User Codes

Add separate codes for family, guests, or service providers.

Easy Removal

Use unique codes so you can remove access later.

Step 4

Pair the Lock With Your Phone

Stand close to the lock and open the manufacturer’s app. Pair using Bluetooth first, then follow the app prompts for Wi-Fi or hub setup if your model supports remote access.

Pair via Bluetooth first because most smart locks start here.
If remote access is supported, connect to Wi-Fi or set up the required hub or bridge.
Run the handing or calibration step so the lock learns your door swing and bolt travel.
Step 5

Batteries & Maintenance

Use fresh batteries when installing your smart lock. Weak or mixed batteries can cause keypad glitches, pairing issues, or inconsistent lock performance.

Use Fresh Batteries

Start with new batteries during installation.

Check Alignment

If the bolt struggles, door alignment may be draining the batteries.

Replace Early

Replace batteries when the lock warns you, not after it dies.

Troubleshooting

Most smart lock issues come from alignment, batteries, pairing distance, or setup steps.

Lock Won’t Calibrate or Bolt Jams
  • Make sure the bolt extends into the strike cleanly.
  • Loosen mounting screws slightly and re-tighten evenly.
  • Check that the deadbolt latch is installed correctly.
App Pairing Fails
  • Enable Bluetooth and stay close to the lock.
  • Restart the app or phone and try again.
  • If using Wi-Fi, confirm your hub or bridge is set up first.
Keypad Codes Do Not Work Consistently
  • Replace batteries first.
  • Confirm the correct code length and any required lock button press.
  • Delete and re-add the user code in the app.
